Sotkamo v Joensuu

Sotkamon Jymy v Joensuun Maila
1st July 2019

Sotkamo were hoping they could extend their unbeaten record this season despite the quick turnaround from their win over Raahe. JoMa on the other hand wanted to take an away win over Sotkamo and avenge their 1-2s home defeat last week.

JoMa and Sotkamo struggled to get anything going in the first couple of inning, but Aleksi Rautiainen opened the scoring for the visitors bringing Juha Puhtimäki home for a 0-1 lead. Roope Korhonen was unable to bring Niilo Piiponniemi to score For the home team and Lauri Rönkkö suffered the same fate moments later. The game remained tight despite JoMa and Sotkamo having plenty of chances in the third inning, however Roope Korhonen managed to level it for Sotkamo by allowing Joni Rytkönen to score. After extreme pressure in the fourth inning, with Konsta Piironen and Tuomas Jussila being out at home, JoMa were then able to regain the lead when Juha Niemi helped bring Lauri Kivinen home to score. Sotkamo were unable to mount a response and fell short by a single run to leave them one jakso down. JoMa won the first jakso 1-2.

JoMa started big in the first inning of the second jakso with Aleksi Rautiainen bringing Tuomas Jussila and Juha Puhtimäki across the line to score. Juha Niemi made it 0-3 when his hit saw Mikko Kemppainen reach home. Sotkamo couldn’t mount a comeback until the fourth inning as Roope Korhonen failed to score in the second and third innings, with Niilo Piiponniemi and Niko Korhonen out at home. Matias Litmanen lifted the home team and got Sotkamo off the mark with Joni Rytkönen scoring. Roope Korhonen again failed to bring home Niko Korhonen but Sotkamo managed to bring Matias Litmanen home off Lauri  Rönkkö’s hit to make it 2-3. For Sotkamo though it was all too late and they couldn’t manage the comeback they needed to force the supervuoro. JoMa won the second jakso 2-3.

The defeat ends Sotkamo’s winning streak and they fall back to third in the table. It was a bad day at the office for veteran Roope Korhonen who only managed 1/6 when attempting to bring runners home from third and was only 33% overall at progressing the point runner.  For JoMa this was a significant victory and it marks their intention to fight hard to retain their title.
