Kankaanpää’s game saver shirt - one of many now available from Unique Branding to support clubs at this time. The big stories Covid-19 and the impact on the season The world is currently in the midst of the worst pandemic since the “Spanish Flu” claimed the lives of between 17 and 50 million people in 1918. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) has affected people’s lives in both direct and indirect ways. In terms of Pesäpallo, the Halli-SM tournament has been cancelled following the group games. In addition to this the start to the 2020 regular season has been postponed to the 2nd June 2020 at the earliest, meaning that the season will not start with the Fugepesis game in Fuengirola, Spain between KPL and Vimpeli on 25th April 2020.  The current position from the Pesäpalloliito (Pesäpallo Association) is that the season will be reduced to 26 games and will be a simple double series (where each team plays each other twice - once at home and once away). Cricket Finland From 24th June to 30th June 2020 Finland was due to host a T20 World Cup European Qualifier tournament. Sadly due to the current Covid-19 pandemic this event has been postponed. It is hoped that this event can be rescheduled for later in the summer and i will be keeping my fingers crossed. The event will mark two historic firsts: these qualifiers are the first of their kind for the T20 format; and the first time that Finland is hosting an international cricket tournament of this type. The fact that Finland has been chosen to host the event is a testament to the hard work and dedication from Cricket Finland and of course the Finnish community also.  I had prepared a post to explain that I will be attending this event and helping Cricket Finland to host the event and have been approved as an official game scorer. Sadly this event is being postponed and the future is uncertain. Rest assured, when this event is rescheduled, I will be doing all I can to atte

During the lockdown here in the UK I have had the odd moment to create some wallpapers for phones, tablets and laptops.  This is my second post with wallpapers, the first was for phones, this is for tablets and laptops. I am distributing these without charge in the hope that fans will use them to show support for their team during this crisis. What is more important is that fans donate or buy what they can from the shops to help keep their teams going. My wish is that anyone who wants to show support for their team and spread the message can do so using these images. The teams’ links and shops are: Hyvinkään Tahko:  Kausikortit  |  Fanituotteet Imatran Pallo-Veikot:  Kausikortit ja fanituotteet  |  Tukiliput Joensuun Maila:  Kausikortit  |  Support your local kotipesä -paidat  |  Fanituotteet Kankaanpään Maila:  Game Saver 2020  |  Fanituotteet Kempeleen Kiri:  Kausikortit  |  Fanituotteet Kiteen Pallo -90:  Kausikortit  |  Fanituotteet Koskenkorv

Finances in sport - the effect of Coronavirus

Image
Crowds are essential for pesis clubs. Coronavirus is effecting clubs at a profound level Photograph from Joensuu Facebook (c) Joensuun Maila 2019 The impact of Coronavirus on finances The impact of Coronavirus (or Covid-19 to be more specific) is many fold, non more so of course than on the health of individuals and in particular the most vulnerable in our society. The unseen costs of this virus are the impact on jobs and finances both in the immediate and near future. Priorities for people must be public health first and foremost, which is why such drastic measures taken across the world are so important.  When society goes into “lockdown” or has to ban gatherings of more than a handful of people, the “entertainment” industry will suffer greatly. Depending on your philosophy, sports can be seen as part of the “entertainment” industry, creating “content” for people’s entertainment, but to me sport is so much more. Sport is a vital part of society and integral to emotional

The Dream Team revisited

Topi Hurskainen showed no hesitation in his first games in a JoMa shirt Photograph from Joensuu Facebook (c) Joensuun Maila 2020 With all pesäpallo games officially cancelled, including this weekend’s semifinals and final, I decided to look back at the dream team and see how the individual players performed. The Halli-SM group games gave us a chance to see how players are warming up for the 2020 season. The dream team was chosen after carefully looking at the players statistics for 2019, how they performed in their team’s lineup and their fielding positions. The 2019 lineup was: Batting order Tommi Mäentausta (KPL) Joni Rytkönen (Sotkamon Jymy) Antti Hartikainen (KPL 2019 - Joensuun Maila 2020) Teemu Nurmio (IPV) Tuomas Jussila (Joensuun Maila 2019 - IPV 2020) Juha Puhtimäki (Joensuun Maila) Olli Heikkala (Vimpelin Veto) Sami Haapakoski (Vimpelin Veto 2019 - Pattijoen Urheilijat Raahe 2020) Antti Korhonen (Sotkamon Jymy) Jokers Jukka-Pekka Vainionpää (Seinäj
