Power Rankings 14th to 20th June 2021

Three weeks into the season and things are hotting up… and I don’t just mean the hot weather Finland has been experiencing.

1st Joensuun Maila

At the start of the week JoMa beat IPV away to claim another 3 points for the season. despite a fairly tight first jakso, JoMa had no problems piling on he runs in the second, out scoring the Reds 0-9. Later in the week, Joensuu became the first team to topple the current champions this season, when Sotkamo visited Kerubi stadium. JoMa had a lot of energy in the game and played with grit and determination to earn 3 points.

2nd Pattijoen Urheilijat, Raahe

Last week we saw PattU finally get a win after some tough and close games to start the season. The win came against the league leaders - Vimpeli, who were without their regular pitcher (and all round golden boy) Perttu Ruuska. PattU won both jakso and claimed a decisive 3 points against the championship hopefuls. The win was significant for PattU, as it ended their losing streak to start the season. From there, PattU went on to beat Koskenkorva, taking a total of 5 points out of a maximum of 6.

3rd Manse PP, Tampere

Manse remain in the top 3 of the power rankings this week despite a narrow loss to KPL on the Friday. Manse took 1 point from the game, after KPL forced extra innings by winning the second jakso. Manse’s second game of the week was a complete dismantling of SiiPe, who had inflated their power ranking status with some high profile wins.

Worst performance - Siilinjärven Pesis

Easy come, easy go. SiiPe’s big results of the last 2 weeks seem all but a distant memory as they failed to pick up a point against struggling Kankaanpään Maila and were completely dominated by Manse. SiiPe allowed 30 runs in total across the 2 games and scored only 10. In fairness to SiiPe, both of these games were going to be difficult, as their opponents were coming of the back of disappointing losses and would have been eager to get results.

Worthy mention - Hyvinkään Tahko

Tahko’s start to the week came with a handy 3 point win over struggling Koskenkorva, but the other 2 games in the week were such that they almost overtake Manse into 3rd place. Tahko’s 2 point win over Kitee marked the first home game of the season for the club, after Covid restrictions kept them on the road for the first 4 games. Tahko’s second home game was a close contest with KPL, where Tahko were unlucky not to walk away with a point or even the victory.
