Pesäpallo awards 2019

This year has been an exciting year in Pesäpallo and we have seen some tremendous efforts from clubs and individuals. Below are the results of the 2019 winners of the Pesäpallo association awards (for men’s superpesis).

Stay tuned for later in the month when we at Superpesis Roundup will dish out our own special awards and tributes...

Baseball players of the year
Men’s Superpesis: Juha Puhtimäki, Joensuun Maila
With an outstanding year and his second consecutive championship under his belt, it is hard to deny that Puhtimäki was not player of the year for 2019. Yes achievements at the plate were only part of his success, as his constant encouragement and team spirit shone.

Superpesis for Boy’s: Perttu Ruuska, Vimpelin Veto
At only 18 years of age Perttu followed up last year’s breakout season with another stellar performance at his breeder club Vimpeli. With 99 runs batted in and 7 kunniajuoksu, Perttu was key to Vimpeli’s success at topping the table. Perttu will be one to watch for the coming years, having established himself now as a key figure in Vimpeli’s deadly lineup.

Manager of the Year
Juhani Lehtimäki, Joensuu Maila
Lehtimäki has plotted his team’s success throughout the season and is due to move on in 2020 and will be replaced Sotkamo legend Mikko Korhonen. What a fitting conclusion to his 2019 season, having managed JoMa to retain their title.

Most valuable players in the playoffs
Aleksi Rautiainen, Joensuun Maila
Rautiainen’s performance in the playoffs came at crucial moments in each series, delivering key runs to lift JoMa and retain the championship.

Pitcher of the year
Mens’ : Juha Puhtimäki, Joensuun Maila
Who else! Puhtimäki was a cunning pitcher that led the team from the front and found ways to strike out batters in tight spots. When you think of any pitcher in 2019 it’s hard to see anyone beating Puhtimäki at that role!

Boys' : Kalle-Tapio Huusko, Tahko, Hyvinkää
Huusko played in all 30 regular season games for Tahko and helped lead them back into the playoff spots this season. Huusko was instrumental in keeping Tahko’s defence on point and limited runs conceded to 218 on the season.

Joker players and newcomers
Joker of the Year: Jukka-Pekka Vainionpää, Seinäjoen JymyJussit
Vainionpää has had more and more runs batted in year on year leading to this year, with over 100 runs batted in for the last 4 seasons. Vainionpää stepping into the lineup as joker to bring 119 runs batted in on the season and was a key figure in securing Seinäjoki’s playoff spot.

Newcomer of the Year: Simo Vainikainen, Siilinjärven Pesis
Vainikainen was a standout name amongst the struggling SiiPe in 2019 and he helped to rescue his team from relegation against Alajärvi and Lippo. One of Vainikainen’s greatest achievements this season was his 100% batting performance against Sotkamo in their first win over SuperJymy for decades.
