Power Rankings - 5th July to 11th July 2021

Withe table well and truly shaken up by Coronavirus and the new “points per game” system, who were the week’s top performers?

1st Kouvolan Pallonlyöjat

Last week’s number 2 goes one better and became number 1 with wins across the board. KPL are one of the teams to greatly benefit from the new points per game system, catapulting them into 2nd in the table. This boost clearly gave the players some further encouragement as they beat Joensuu, Sotkamo and Kankaanpää. Also of note was the emergence of 17 year old pitcher Elias Pitkänen, who started the season with local rivals Hamina.

2nd Vimpelin Veto

Vimpeli dusted off their loss to Tahko last week and followed that up with some solid wins over JymyJussit and PattU to challenge for the top of the table. Vimpeli’s success rate at moving the point runner in both games was over 60% and their offence seems to be on fine form. The announcement of the Itä v Länsi players sees Vimpeli well represented for the west, with the maximum number of players permitted (6).

3rd Koskenkorvan Urheilijat

2021 is certainly shaping up to be a curious year, with unexpected results, the league table being shaken up and records being broken. The season for KoU is no different: despite only making 4 points in their first 8 games of the season (losing all 8) before going into the midsummer break, Koskenkorva has earned 11 points from a maximum of 12 in the last 4 games! This includes 2 wins over the struggling Kitee. Whatever the team are doing at the moment seems to be working for them, but their next challenge will be a real test for them - Sotkamo.

Worst performance - Seinäjoen JymyJussit

Three straight losses put Seinäjoki at the bottom of the power rankings (except for the fact that IPV haven’t played any games). The week started with a 2-0 loss to Vimpeli, which was expected, followed by a 0-1 loss to Joensuu; however it was a 2-1 loss to SiiPe that pushed JymyJussit way down the rankings.

Worthy mention - Imatran Pallo-Veikot

Despite not playing any games this week, IPV managed to climb up the table due to the misfortune of those around them. At the time of writing, IPV are in 5th place in the table. Once their self-isolation period ends and their season restarts, the pressure will be on to maintain their points per game average and finish in the top 8.
