Seinäjoki saw off a Manse comeback in the first jakso to take 3 points |
Manse PP, Tampere v Seinäjoen JymyJussit
0-2 (6-7, 1-6)
Today’s featured game is the first ever meeting between Seinäjoki and Manse. Manse have started the season with some energy and intent, taking points from Kouvola and IPV away, as well as winning away against Kankaanpää. Manse’s home games however haven’t produced any points for the team, but their game against Hyvinkää on 10th July hung in the balance until late in the second jakso. Seinäjoki on the other hand have seen points flow freely in their opening matches, including a shock away win against Vimpeli. One thing that needs to be borne in mind however is that 2 of the 4 games were against struggling Koskenkorva. Manse have had some powerful hitting from former Joensuu hard hitter Juha Niemi, who has 11 RBI in the season so far including a home run (kunniajuoksu), as well as an equally solid performance from Tommi Malinen who has 10 RBI. Seinäjoki have only got 1 batter with double figures for RBI and that is Jukka-Pekka Vainionpää; however Ville Viita has had great success at moving the point runner to 2nd base, with 20 successful hits out of 22 attempts (from 1st to 2nd base) and has himself reached home for 7 runs in the season to date.
Manse took to the plate first and opened the scoring with Tommi Malinen’s hit to the midfield line bringing Jasperi Luoma home in front of a jubilant home crowd. Whilst Seinäjoki immediately responded and flexed their muscles with 4 runs in the 1st inning. Elmeri Lieto’s appearance at the plate was particularly costly for Manse, who saw Ville Viita and Tuomas Raunio score from 2 hits. Another run came when a bad pitch led to Henri Puputti score from a walk. A Juha Niemi blast in the 2nd inning narrowed the gap, but Seinäjoki piled on 3 more runs in the 3rd inning to give Manse a mountain to climb. In the 4th inning Manse turned up the heat and scored 4 runs to bring them back into the game; however Kimmo Carlson was unable to bring home Joona Eirola to tie the jakso. The first run came off a perfectly weighted hit from Niemi that dropped into right field to bring Tuomas Tuohisaari home. The throw to home was wide of the mark and left Seinäjoki scrambling for the ball whilst Juuso Myllyniemi scored in front of an ecstatic home crowd. Seinäjoki breathed a sigh of relief and won the jakso 6-7.
Manse put on a show for an enthusiastic home crowd, but it wasn’t enough for a win |
Despite a hard fought comeback in the first jakso, Manse’s first home win of the season is still to be recorded. Manse show great ability to dig themselves out of holes and put runs on the board, but there are still some issues and errors that put them in the hole in the first place. Manse’s highpoint, statically speaking, was their high success rate at moving the point runner - 62% (44/71) compared to Seinäjoki - 52% (44/85). Seinäjoki’s Jukka-Pekka Vainionpää showed why he leads Superpesis for all time RBIs per game by scoring 4 RBIs; however his teammates equally looked dangerous up and down the lineup. Elmeri Lieto was 100% in the game with 3 RBIs and 1 run, but one name that really stands out was joker Ville Viita who was instrumental in breaking through in the second jakso with his kunniajuoksu, 4 runs and 9/12 successful hits in all situations.
Juha Niemi continues to dominate the statistics for Manse’s offence, with 3 RBI and 1 run; however Manse will need to see more production up and down the lineup if they want to be consistently score. Having said that, the energy Manse brings to games is fantastic and the home fans were equally as lively. Runs will come and go in any given game, but when the team and fans have such great energy and positive mental attitude it wont be long until Manse start notching up more wins. For today however, the points firmly belonged to Seinäjoki who outplayed their opponents in a great game.

Vimpeli returned to winning ways against Kankaanpää on 14th July; however missed a chance to take the full 3 points thanks to Miikka Riikonen and Petteri Kortelainen bringing home 3 runners in the 1st inning of the second jakso. Despite getting runners into scoring position 16 times in the game compared to Kankaanpää’s 7, Vimpeli only picked up 6 runs off the bat and 1 from a wild throw.
Koskenkorva looked to upset a visiting Patijoki side that is still reeling from a series of injuries, including regulars Jari Törmänen and Paavo Pelto. From the start PattU led the game; however after winning the first jakso Koskenkorva found a way back and did something that they haven’t done so far this season - tied a jakso. The difference between the 2 sides was the first inning mistakes that saw Timo Kallio and Severi Piispanen score for PattU off wild throws.
IPV’s offence struggled once again, this time on the road against KPL. IPV have scored a league low 18 runs across 4 games coming into this game, but their defence has been pretty tight, keeping their opponents to just 20 runs over the same 4 games. KPL’s offence is used to putting runs on the board and have taken 9 or more runs in each game so far this season; the matchup with IPV therefore was intriguing. In the end KPL’s Jere Dahlström and Matti Latvala combined for 5 RBIs in the day, the only runs in the game. IPV were shut out and nobody on the lineup batting 1st to 9th had more than a 50% success rate at moving the point runner. KPL took the 3 points to make it their 6th straight win of the season, 5th in a row with maximum points.
A natural wonder gave way to Sotkamo’s deluge of 20 runs against SiiPe |
Hyvinkää have struggled to earn points since their opening game where they beat Kankaanpää at home. Kitee have been a dark horse so far this season and the results have surprised many critics who were left concerned about the impact of the delay to the season on their playing squad. The game looked in the bag for Hyvinkää after an explosive 10 runs in the 1st inning of the first jakso led to an insurmountable lead. The second jakso however got away from Tahko and Kitee did what they have best all season - come back strong in the second jakso. Kitee tied the game and forced the supervuoro, which they won 0-4 to add to their tally of hard fought wins.
