Superpesis final review - round 3

Sotkamon Jymy (2) 1 v 2 Joensuun Maila (4)
2-1 (6-5, 1-7, 3-0)
Prediction: In our preview we suggested that the series would be tight, with Sotkamo winning 3-2. Having gone 2-0 down in the series it was crunch time for Sotkamo and they pulled off a dramatic win at home to force game 4. Is this the start of a run for Sotkamo? If they want to win the championship it will have to be.

Summary: With a grim backdrop at a windy and wet Sotkamo, fans could be forgiven for staying at home, yet those who attended saw a dramatic supervuoro win for Sotkamo. The JoMa faithful had made the trip in the hope of seeing their team clinch the series and the championship; however a resolute Sotkamo performance in the supervuoro meant they will have wait a little while longer to see if the champions can retain their title. The first jakso was packed with drama as the game swung from one team to another. Joensuu’s Aleksi Rautiainen opened the game by bringing Konsta Piironen home in the 1st inning. Henri Litmanen made it 0-2 as Juha Puhtimäki crossed home base; however Joensuu couldn’t build on this lead. Sotkamo narrowed the lead to 1-2 thanks t Lauri Rönkkö’s hit in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Joensuu rebuilt on their lead to make it 1-3 with Konsta Piironen’s solo kunniajuoksu in the 2nd inning. Sotkamo tied the jakso in the bottom of the 2nd with runs from Roope Korhonen and Lauri Rönkkö To give the home side something to cheer about, but Joensuu soon rectified this with 2 runs in the 3rd inning from Aleksi Rautiainen and Juha Niemi. With time starting to run out for Sotkamo, Antti Korhonen brought leadoff man Niilo Piiponniemi home to bring the visitors lead back down to 1 run; however Roope Korhonen and Lauri Rönkkö both came up short in the 3rd inning to end the rally. In the bottom of the 4th inning Sotkamo set to it and Lauri Rönkkö tied the game bringing Niilo Korhonen home to score, moments before he brought Antti Korhonen home for the jakso win.

Joensuu hit their stride in the second jakso

Joensuu took to the second jakso with purpose and Sotkamo seemed to fade away (as often they seemed to do in the regular season). Aleksi Rautiainen and Juha Niemi opened the jakso with 2 runs, in what would be a one sided jakso. Joensuu added to their lead in the 2nd inning with 4 more runs to leave Sotkamo feeling under the pump once more. Juha Niemi’s run in the 3rd inning left Sotkamo a 6 run mountain to climb to avoid going to a supervuoro. Sotkamo seemed resigned to the fact that the jakso was lost and the 4th inning seemed flat, with Antti Korhonen bringing Jere Vikström home for a consolation run to leave the second jakso score 1-7.

In the supervuoro Joensuu took to the plate first; however Sotkamo managed to shut down the visitor’s offence and set themselves the task of scoring a single run to win the game and keep their season alive. As Joensuu skilfully put Sotkamo’s opening batters to the sword for 2 quick outs, things looked drastic for Sotkamo; however Roope Korhonen came to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd base and hit a shallow drive to centre field, which fell between the outfielders and ran on out of bounds. The crowd cheered as they knew that there was no stopping Niko Korhonen from scoring. Roope and Antti Korhonen made their way to 3rd base to officially count the hit as a 3 run kunniajuoksu.

Joensuu will be shaken, having put so many runs on the board in the second jakso, to have lost to Sotkamo in the supervuoro. To be honest, if there was a team you would not want to face in a supervuoro or kotiutuskilpailu it would be Sotkamo; in the regular season Sotkamo won 8 games out of 10 that went to a supervuoro and the only game that went to a kotiutuskilpailu. Sotkamo’s hero in the supervuoro was veteran and local legend Roope Korhonen, who hit a 3 run kunniajuoksu down to the last out to win the game. Without those last minute heroics however, Roope had a fairly pedestrian night as he was 1/5 at bringing runners home from 3rd base and 6/11 overall. Sotkamo’s best player on the day was Lauri Rönkkö who was 5/7 overall, with 4/6 at bringing runners home from 3rd base. Joensuu’s Konsta Piironen was big in all areas at bat, going 10/14 overall with a kunniajuoksu and going 1/1 and 2/2 moving runners to 2nd and 3rd respectively. Joensuu dominated in chances to score runs, with 24 3rd base situations compared to Sotkamo’s 19. Whilst Joensuu scored big in the second jakso, Sotkamo came up with the goods when it mattered, to win the game in a supervuoro.
